Gabriela Mistral, 1889-1957, is the greatest Chilean poetess of the 20th century. In 1945 she received the first Nobel Prize for a Spanish-American writer, for a work dedicated to childhood and the mysteries of life and death. The three poems I have chosen to set to music are among the best known in her repertoire. The author speaks of a dreamed motherhood, full of tenderness and love for her people.
